Recognized for her versatility, soprano Leila Schütz excels in the baroque repertoire as well as in the comic roles of operetta and opera, which she imbues with her humor and extravagant physical comedy. Deeply engaged with Yiddish music, she regularly performs this repertoire, which holds a special place in her artistic identity.
She thrives in interdisciplinary projects and also works as a director, crafting performances that are both dynamic and whimsical.
Winner of three awards at the Cavalli Monteverdi Competition in Cremona 2023, French soprano Leila Schütz was a member of the Opera Studio at the Rostock Theater (Germany) from 2023 to 2025. She performed as Frasquita (Carmen), the Sandman and Dew Fairy in Hänsel and Gretel, Amore in Gluck's Orfeo ed Euridice, Caterina Cavalieri in Amadeus (Peter Schaffer), and the four female roles in The Wizard of Oz (Lucy Landymore).
Leila performs with various ensembles and festivals accross Europe, ranging from early music to contemporary creations. A repertoire she is passionate about and performs regularly is Yiddish music: she sang the title role in the Glikl-Oratorye, a Yiddish creation by composer Alan Bern performed at the Kaisersaal in Erfurt. She also regularly performs with the Kadya Trio with Alan Bern and Mark Kovnatskiy: in 2025, they performed among others at the Cracow Philharmonie, as well as the Shtetl Berlin Festival. Upcoming engagements include the Shalom Musik Köln and Yiddish Summer Weimar festivals. In the summer of 2026, she will take on the main role of Bern's new opera, Togbukh, at the Theater Mon Ami in Weimar, under the direction of Max Löwenstein.
In the operatic repertoire, she has also sung the Queen of the Night and she was Zerbinetta in the hybrid opera Dafne auf Naxos by Richard Strauss and Heinrich Schütz, with the Serkowitzer Volksoper. She took on the role of Olympia (The Tales of Hoffmann) at the Mittelsächsisches Theater ball and debuted at the Semperoper in Dresden in the role of a Eunuch in The Nose (Shostakovich) directed by Peter Konwitschny. Additionally, she has performed in concerts on various international stages such as the Laeiszhalle in Hamburg, and the Orfeo Week festival in Lodi.
Next to her singing career, Leila also works as an opera stage director. Her staging of the Magic Flute was performed at the MuTh Theater in Vienna, in 2019. In 2022, she co-staged a youth production of Hänsel and Gretel in Dresden, and in September 2026, she will stage Monteverdi’s L'Orfeo at the municipal Museum of Brunswick with her artistic team, the Callisto Collective.
